Students witness the mock birth.   Delivery of the placenta
Head is out! Midwife checks the infant's neck to make sure there is no cord wrapped around.   Midwife checks the placenta to make sure all parts are there, and none left inside.

After delivery, the umbilical cord is tied in two places with clean string after it stops pulsing. Here a clean, sterile blade is used to cut the cord.

One woman in the class had told us that she gave birth alone and could only find a rock on the ground to pound the cord in two. Infection is a common killer.

Midwife massages the uterus to prevent uterine hemorrhage. Uterine hemorrhage is the #1 cause of maternal death in the world and in Tibet. It only takes 1-3 hours for a woman to die from hemorrhage.

From Gargon there is neither enough time nor the means to get to a hospital.
